Accessibility

At the Shade Burlesque Festival, we are committed to uplifting intersectional forms of accessibility and accommodative practices. Everyone deserves to participate and celebrate the art of burlesque and drag without restrictions.

Though at times, the spaces we occupy are limited with pre-existing accessibility options, we actively build accommodations into our practices to ensure our work does not stop at physical space. You can learn more about each of our venue's accessibility features, limitations, and what to expect below.

At the Shade Burlesque Festival, you can expect to see:

  • Wheel chair accessible entrances into each public event

  • ASL interpreters for each public event, including the Thursday Shade Speaks, Friday Showcase, and Saturday Caber-Shade Competition

  • No strobe lights, fog, or haze machines will be used

  • Trigger and content warnings will be given prior to any acts with sensitive themes or common triggers

  • Down-time space with figet toys, blankets, books, and colouring pages for individuals needing a less stimulating break

  • Free face masks, ear plugs, and hand sanitizer will be available for use

  • Safety Liaisons trained in First Aid and de-escalation will be stationed and roaming the event to uphold consent-based practices, safety, and accessibility support
